Rubin Mayer Baumatz was a Polish Jew and a student of medicine. He was born on 21 September 1906, in the town Zavuierzie. His father was a merchant by the name of Salomon, his mother’s name was Sara Lieberman. His official place of residence was in Palestine, in the city of Tel Aviv, Herzlia colony, Wehaftig. He was married to Ruhama Gutman, who lived in an apartment in Quibutce Hashomer Hatca ir Hapolani. There are no definite clues as to when, how and for what reason he came to Subotica.1467 IV 4617 935

The only piece of evidence we have is a bill for his stay in the hospital. From that, we can learn that in the beginning of October 1935, he attempted to flee across the border (on his return to Palestine) and that he was wounded by the border patrol troops and subsequently taken to the city hospital. It appears that his wounds were healed and that he was discharged from the public hospital in Subotica.11 10 1935

On 21 October 1935, the police determined that he had been living on the unreported address of Jugovićeva 4, with a Samuil Gros. On the form for collecting information about the patient that went along with the bill, it says that he was the financial dependent of the old JVO (Jevrejska verska Opština – Jewish Religious Community), which was located on Frankopanska 14. 5 10 1935

What happened afterwards to Rubin Baumatz? Did he arrive on his destination in Palestine? Did the town municipality charge his hospital stay? These questions remain unanswered.21 10 1935
